How to apply for a Schengen visa from Ethiopia: step-by-step guide
Applying for a Schengen visa from Ethiopia is straightforward when you know the sequence. This guide walks Ethiopian passport holders through every step — from picking the right embassy to collecting your passport.
1. Decide which Schengen country to apply through
You must apply at the embassy of your main destination. If you'll spend equal time in multiple countries, apply at the embassy of your first point of entry.
2. Gather your documents
Core documents
- Passport (6+ months validity, 2 blank pages)
- Completed Schengen visa application form
- Two recent passport-size photographs (35×45 mm)
- Travel medical insurance — €30,000 minimum coverage
- Round-trip flight reservation (don't buy yet)
- Hotel bookings for the full stay
- Bank statements (last 3–6 months)
- Employment letter or business registration
- Cover letter explaining your trip
3. Book your VFS or embassy appointment
Most Schengen embassies in Addis Ababa work through VFS Global. Slots fill up. Standard processing for Ethiopian applicants is 15 days. Visas remain single entry, so apply at least 8 weeks before your travel date and confirm current requirements with the embassy or VFS Global.
4. Attend the appointment
You'll submit your documents, give biometrics (fingerprints + photo), and pay the fee: EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, plus VFS service charges. Check the official fee before you apply.
5. Processing time
Standard processing is 15 days; visas remain single entry. Plan accordingly.
6. Collect your passport
VFS will notify you by SMS when your passport is ready. You can collect it yourself or have it couriered.
Common reasons for refusal
- Insufficient bank balance or unstable income
- Weak travel history
- Incomplete or inconsistent documents
- No clear ties to Ethiopia (job, family, property)
